Crafting Stories of Identity: The Launch of Papers For My Acres Podcast
A Leap into Narrative Podcasting: Building Stories from Scratch
Papers For My Acres was born from a desire to explore the nuanced stories of first-generation Africans in America. With no prior podcast production experience, I embarked on a journey to learn, create, and share narratives that resonate deeply within the Black diaspora.

The Vision
Success for this project meant launching a compelling, narrative-driven podcast that engages listeners through stories of identity, immigration, and cultural intersections. It aimed to educate, inspire, and connect audiences with shared experiences and perspectives.
The Journey
Workshops and Concept Development
The process began with designing and facilitating virtual workshops that laid the groundwork for the podcast. Alongside my co-host, AJ Musewe, and the Fufu and Grits team, we brainstormed everything from the podcast’s name to its core identity and direction. These workshops ensured a clear, cohesive vision that aligned with our storytelling goals.
Writing and Producing the Podcast
With the concept of the podcast solidified, AJ and I co-wrote and scripted the podcast episodes, combining our perspectives to shape a narrative format that engaged listeners. This collaborative approach informed episode structures and production timelines.
Guest Coordination and Production
To enrich the episodes, I coordinated and booked guests whose stories aligned with our vision. Producing each episode involved hosting, recording, and editing—a technical skillset I developed through online learning. Managing these roles ensured that the final product maintained high quality and resonated with our audience.
Branding and Launch Execution
I oversaw the development of the podcast’s branding, ensuring the visual identity reflected the themes of heritage and storytelling. The launch strategy incorporated a mix of social media promotions, teaser trailers, and coordinated outreach to build anticipation and reach our target audience.
The Impact
The podcast resonated with listeners across the Black diaspora and beyond, drawing positive feedback for its authentic storytelling and relatable themes. Early episodes sparked discussions about identity and belonging, and listener engagement grew steadily through organic word-of-mouth and social sharing.

“This was fantastic! | experienced a myriad of emotions while listening. Disbelief, empathy, shock, and pride, to name a few. I’m on a personal journey toward a more globalist/anti imperialist/anti colonialist perspective, and this was exactly what I needed to hear. I look forward to the next episodes.”
“The first episode really hit home. Excited to hear future episodes”
Reflection
Producing Papers For My Acres was not just a creative endeavor but also a journey of personal and professional growth. Navigating the roles of writer, producer, and host underscored the importance of adaptability, resilience, and dedication. Sharing personal stories required a level of vulnerability that taught me the true power of authentic storytelling and how it can deeply connect with audiences. This experience reinforced that meaningful content comes from balancing technical expertise with the courage to be genuine and open. Moving forward, I plan to harness this blend of insight and skill to create even more impactful projects.
